Torcantern is the odd one left in the patch: a permanent grin, terrible timing and a flame that refuses to go out. He makes room for anyone who never quite stopped being strange.

No grand prophecy. Just good company on the wrong side of midnight.

The spark

The last candle went out. The visitors went home. In a forgotten patch, one pumpkin opened his eyes and found something green burning where the wick used to be.

He took the hint. Halloween was not finished with him.

The old cemetery had a closing time. Torcantern had a different opinion. He perched by the gate and lit the path for every late arrival.

The ghosts complained about the brightness. Then they stayed for the company.

Beyond the graves, a black lake held another green grin. Finally, someone who understood him. He told it his worst joke.

It grinned back. Torcantern called that a very good review.
